When we look at the canon of Urdu literature, it doesn’t take much time to realise women are abnormally absent from the picture. If we speak of the classical age, The important Tazkiras like Khush-Marka-e-Zeba or Majmua-e-Naghz rarely mention a female.
2023 marks three hundred years of the legendary poet Meer Taqi Meer. A fresh wave of readers is turning to him, paying tribute to his poetic and linguistic legacy. In this festival of Meer’s life and poetry, a question is being asked more often than any other: Where is Meer’s final resting abode?

Born in Delhi, in the year 1748, Yahya Aman, better known as the poet Jurat Qalandar Bakhsh was unlike any other poet of his time. Known for an artful portrayal of mischief, mirth and mockery in his poetry, Jurat, was defined as a ‘skirt-chasing poet’ by none other than Mir Taqi Mir.
अब्दुल हई उर्फ़ साहिर लुधियानवी के ख़ानदान में दूर-दूर तक शेर-ओ-शाइरी की रिवायत का नाम-ओ-निशान नहीं मिलता फिर भी उस्ताद फ़ैयाज़ हरियाणवी की पनाह में साहिर तक़रीबन पन्द्रह-सोलह की उम्र ही से शाइरी करने लगे थे। स्कूल के ही दिनों में साहिर को फ़ारसी, उर्दू की सैकड़ों ग़ज़लें और नज़्में हिफ़्ज़ थीं। साहिर अपने दोस्तों को अक्सर ग़ालिब, मीर, सौदा, इक़बाल और फ़िराक़ गोरखपुरी की शाइरी सुनाया करते थे।
