कैफ़ी का जन्म आजमगढ़ के एक छोटे से गाँव मजवाँ में 1918 को हुआ था। उनका ख़ानदान पुराने ख़्यालात का जागीरदार ख़ानदान था। जहाँ न शिक्षा थी और न नए ख़्यालात की वो आज़ादी जिसे लेकर कैफ़ी जन्मे थे।
A relentless humanist, a hopeless romantic, and a heartbroken patriot, Faiz is everything that life can offer. He is no stranger to the festivities and griefs of the human. His oeuvre is the adjudicator of humanity. Faiz, to me, was the last humanist of the twentieth century who embraced everything human.
बहर क्या है? बहर घड़ी की टिक-टिक है। बह’र लय है, हू-ब-हू जैसे हमारी साँसों की लय, हमारी नब्ज़ की लय, हमारे दिल की धड़कन की लय, समन्दर की लहरों की लय, हवा का वेग, नदी का प्रवाह, ऋतुओं का बदलना, सुब्ह होना- दोपहर होना- शाम होना- रात होना और फिर सुब्ह होना।
Niyazi may be read as a poet of memories and reveries, fictions and fancies who drew upon them as his basic material. He was a poet of soft notes, audible whispers, and intimate expostulations. His disputes and dissents with life and time are firm, his diction is polite, and his tones of voice echo in hearts rather than heads.
जिगर मुरादाबादी उन चन्द सोच बदलने वाले शायरों में शामिल हैं, जिन्होंने बीसवीं सदी में ग़ज़ल के मेयार को गिरने नहीं दिया, बल्कि उसको ज़ुबानो-बयान के नये जहानों की सैर भी करायी। उसे नए लहजे और नए रंग से चमकाया भी। जिगर साहिब ने उर्दू शायरी को और कुछ दिया हो या न दिया हो लेकिन जिगर साहब उर्दू शायरी का वो पहला नाम हैं जिन्हें किताब और स्टेज पर एक जैसी मक़बूलियत ही नहीं महबूबियत भी हासिल हुई।
