मीरा जी का असली नाम मोहम्मद सनाउल्लाह ‘सानी’ डार था। लाहौर में विलादत हुई , इनके वालिद का नाम मुंशी महताबउद्दीन था जो रेलवे में मुलाज़मत करते थे और इनकी वालिदा का नाम ज़ैनब बेगम था। इनके वालिद को मुलाज़मत के दौरान कई मुख़्तलिफ़ शह्रों में क़याम करना पड़ता कभी गुजरात के काठियावाड़ ,बलूचिस्तान वग़ैरह वग़ैरह। मीरा जी वालिद के साथ ख़ूब घूमे इसका उनके ज़ेहन पर बहुत गहरा असर पड़ा और छोटी उम्र से ही वो घुमक्कड़ क़िस्म के हो गए थे ।
